Surprisingly Educational Apps
My Digital Notes: TCEA 2012
Session by Lisa Johnson and Yolanda Barker
Lisa and Yolanda quickly and entertaingly introduced a ton of great apps and how they could be used in education at a packed iPlayground during TCEA 2012 this afternoon. The majority of the apps mentioned were free or were available at a very low cost. Below are some of the apps that caught my attention:
- Photo Measures Lite
- This app is amazing in that it allows you to take a picture and measure things within that picture in different units of measurement; inches, feet, centimeters, yards, etc. It also allows you to measure angles in the picture.
- Arrows, numbers and text are used to label whatever you are measuring within that picture.
- Great app for math
- Arounder Touch HD
- This app can take you and your students around the world by placing you in a 360 panoramic view of different locations around the world
- Some of those locations include; Rome, Venice, Paris, etc.
- Any app that can transport our students different places aroudn the world is great and can be used for all grade levels in multiple classes; Social Studies, Science, Math, English, Art, etc.
- Songify
- Some or most people would look at this app and think that its all fun and games with no educational connection at all because this app basically takes your ordinary speech and converts it into a song.
- Lisa and Yolanda mentioned that it IS fun and educational in that students can use it to create songs that are related to class content and use it as review
- ELL students can use it to record themselves speaking in English and then play it back to them in a song.
- Talking Tom, Talking Ben, Talking etc.
- If you have not seen the Talking Tom or Talking Ben and all the Talking friends then you are missing out.
- Again, this app is a lot of fun to play with and mess around with but Lisa and Yolanda discussed how they use it to create classroom news with students
- How it can be used to record different segments by different students and then take that video and combine it all in iMovie to create a short story or short film.
- So in theory you can use to for digital story telling, create videos about content, vocabulary, etc that students can use later to review individually or as a group.
- Videolicous
- This app allows you to take different photos and videos and put them together. Once you collect them and put them together you can talk about the different videos and photos and it will automatically combine your recorded narrative and combine it into a cool looking video.
- Another great tool that will allow teachers and students to create digital stories or videos about content or subject matter and make it fun and entertaining and allow it to be saved and used to teach and/or for review.
I had a great time attend their session and if any of you all ever get that chance to see these two ladies in action I strongly suggest you do so.
